How to Book a Wedding Celebrant
Thinking About a Wedding Celebrant? Here’s Everything You Need to Know
When it comes to planning your wedding, one of the most important choices you’ll make is who you want to stand alongside you as you say your vows. For many couples, that means stepping away from the formalities of a registrar or religious service and choosing a wedding celebrant instead — someone who can create a completely personal ceremony that truly tells your love story.
If you’re not quite sure what a wedding celebrant does (or why you might want one), don’t worry — I’ve got you. Here’s everything you need to know

So, What Is a Celebrant?
A wedding celebrant is someone who designs and delivers wedding ceremonies that are completely tailored to you. We take the time to get to know you both, hear your story, and craft a ceremony that reflects your relationship, your personalities, and everything you hold dear.
Unlike a registrar, a celebrant-led ceremony isn’t legally binding — which means you’re free to have your wedding absolutely anywhere you like, styled and structured in a way that feels just right for you.
Types of Celebrants (and What That Means for You)
There are a few different types of celebrants out there:
- Independent celebrants (like me!) create bespoke, non-legally binding ceremonies that can be romantic, fun, spiritual, symbolic — whatever suits you.
- Humanist celebrants offer secular ceremonies that are meaningful and inclusive.
- Faith-based celebrants may include religious elements in their ceremonies.
In England and Wales, celebrant-led weddings aren’t yet legally recognised (although this is currently being discussed in Parliament) — so you’ll need to pop to the registry office to do the legal bit either before or after your wedding day. But in places like Scotland and Northern Ireland, humanist celebrants can legally marry you.
Either way, your celebrant-led ceremony is where the magic happens. That’s the moment your friends and family will remember — heartfelt, unique, and full of love.

Why Choose a Celebrant? Here’s What Makes It So Special…
💛 A Ceremony That’s All About You
No scripts. No generic vows. Just a beautifully crafted ceremony full of meaning, emotion, and joy — written just for you.
🌿 Get Married Anywhere
A clifftop in Cornwall? A forest clearing? Your family’s back garden? With a celebrant, the world’s your wedding venue.
⏳ No Clock Watching
Celebrants don’t rush. We don’t have five other weddings to get to that day. Your ceremony has the time and space it deserves.
🔥 Add Personal Touches and Traditions
Handfasting, candle lighting, ring blessings, jumping the broom — or something completely new! You can weave in symbolic rituals that reflect your heritage, beliefs, or personalities.
✨ A Relaxed, Heartfelt Atmosphere
Celebrant-led ceremonies often feel more intimate, more relaxed, and more connected. It’s like having a friend lead your wedding — someone who really gets you.

How to Choose the Right Wedding Celebrant for You
This is a big one — your celebrant is there with you for one of the most important moments of your lives, so finding the right fit is key.
🌼 Do a Little Digging
Start by browsing celebrant directories (like The Celebrant Directory or The Association of Independent Celebrants), checking out Instagram, or asking your venue or planner for recommendations.
Look for reviews, watch videos, read testimonials — you’ll start to get a feel for who resonates with you.
☕ Book a Chat
Most wedding celebrants (me included!) offer a free consultation. It’s a chance to chat through your ideas, ask questions, and see if you click. You want someone you feel completely comfortable with — someone who gets you and your vibe.
❓ Ask Questions That Matter
Here are a few helpful ones:
- What’s your process for creating the ceremony?
- Can we include personal vows, rituals or readings?
- Have you worked at our venue before?
- What’s your backup plan if you’re unwell on the day?
💌 Understand the Package
Celebrant prices can range from £450–£1,000+, depending on experience and what’s included. A good package will usually cover planning meetings, unlimited support, a personalised script, and officiating the ceremony on the day. Some also offer a rehearsal if you’d like one.
Personalising Your Ceremony — The Fun Bit!
Once you’ve booked your celebrant, it’s time to start shaping the ceremony together. This is where the magic really starts to happen.
- ✍️ Write your own vows (or let your celebrant help you craft them).
- 👨👩👧👦 Include your loved ones — invite friends or family to read, sing, or join a ritual.
- 📖 Pick readings and music that speak to your story.
- 🐾 Make an entrance (or an exit!) — with your dog as ring bearer, on a tractor, in a boat… the sky’s the limit.

So, Is a Celebrant Right for You?
If you’re dreaming of a ceremony that feels relaxed, joyful, meaningful — and completely you — then yes. Whether you’re planning a rustic farm wedding, a barefoot beach celebration, or something utterly out of the box, a celebrant can help bring your vision to life.
It’s about more than just words. It’s about creating a moment in time that feels magical, personal, and unforgettable.
And I’d be honoured to help you do just that.
