First-Time Wedding Fair Experience: A Celebrant’s Journey

For new businesses, sharing your story and building connections quickly is key & wedding fayres are the perfect place to start.
Stepping into the world of weddings as an exhibitor at a wedding fair was an exhilarating journey. As a first-time exhibitor, I recently had the chance to showcase my wedding business at one of these vibrant, feel-good events. The Wedding Experience Wedding Show, at the Kent Event Centre, Detling Hill, just outside Maidstone. In this post, I’m sharing the highs, the lessons, and all the excitement from my very first wedding fayre experience.
When I booked the wedding fayre for 8th October 2023, it was only May—and I hadn’t even started training yet. What followed was a whirlwind of planning, prepping, and late-night list-making to bring my vision to life.
Setting the stage was no small feat. My stand was my canvas, and I wanted it to reflect my brand in every beautiful detail. I carefully chose colours, and decorations to create an inviting and aesthetically pleasing space. Every detail mattered. I knew my brand identity had to shine, and so every detail on my stand echoed it—right down to the sage green tablecloth! The Sand Ceremony display featured sands in soft sage and mauve, and even the handfasting ribbons were made to match by Rebecca Waldron (Tying the Knot studio), and the colours are an exact match to the rest of the brand, and beautifully tied.
From Booking to Bunting: My Wedding Fayre Countdown
(a.k.a. What Actually Happens Between a Bold Decision and the Big Day)
🗓️ May 2023 – Booked the wedding fayre… before I’d even started my training. Brave? Bonkers? Both.
📚 June–July – Began celebrant training and dove headfirst into business planning (hello, late-night Pinterest scrolls and endless to-do lists).
🎨 August – Started designing my stand: colours chosen, rituals selected, branding nailed down. Ordered leaflets, business cards, and dreamed big.
🧵 September – Final touches: handfasting ribbons made, sand ceremony display prepared, postcard design finalised. Practised my “friendly-but-not-too-eager” smile.
🎪 Early October – Packed everything (and a few nerves) into the car, ran through my checklist 1,000 times, and said a small prayer to the printer gods.
🎉 8th October 2023 – Show time! Butterflies. Banners. And the beginning of something truly special.
From Business Cards to Fairy Dust: Crafting a Stand That Wowed
I invested in high-quality leaflets and business cards—because they weren’t just handouts, they were my first impression. I also designed a beautiful roller banner to showcase my offering, & carefully selected eye-catching photos to draw in passing couples.

Thinking about the finer details
As a solo exhibitor, I had to plan the day with precision—even celebrants need comfort breaks and hydration! Thankfully, the venue kindly provided a packed lunch, and I came armed with two litres of water to keep the chat flowing (and my voice intact!).
Couples shared contact details and love stories on postcards, helping me personalise their ceremony—GDPR-friendly and absolutely ghost-free, promise!
Butterflies & Banners: The Big Day Arrives
On the morning of the wedding fayre, I was equal parts nervous and excited — with a belly full of butterflies! This was a huge moment for me: my very own business was about to spread its wings, and I was determined to make the most of every second.
Here’s how the day unfolded through the eyes of a first-time exhibitor (with a dream, a banner, and a LOT of snacks):
As soon as the couples and their families began arriving, the atmosphere buzzed with energy. Their excitement was contagious—I couldn’t stop smiling.
Wearing my favourite celebrant outfit, I felt confident and ready to welcome every person who walked toward my stand.
Connecting with each couple was a joy. They shared their wedding dreams, and I listened with care, eager to help bring their vision to life.
We chatted about guest numbers, participants, rituals, and ceremony styles—soon we were all swept up in the magic of their day. It was a moment of shared excitement, and it reminded me exactly why I do what I do.
New Friends, Lessons Learned, and Aha Moments
Chatting with fellow exhibitors was absolutely invaluable. I picked up tips from seasoned pros, swapped stories, and made some brilliant connections. These conversations left me feeling inspired—and they’ve planted the seed for a ‘Recommended Suppliers’ page on my website. I’d love to showcase other talented, trusted wedding professionals from across the South West, and help connect my couples with the best in the business.
As for the logistics? Everything went (mostly) smoothly—though I did narrowly avoid spilling lukewarm coffee all over my dress!
Naturally, there were hiccups and challenges—but each one was a chance to adapt, learn, and grow on the spot. Flexibility was vital, especially in the lively atmosphere of a wedding fayre.
Still, what made the day truly unforgettable were the heartfelt moments—like seeing couples’ faces light up when a ritual truly resonated. Watching their excitement as they pictured it in their own ceremony was pure magic—an “aha” moment for them, and for me too.
Making Connections
Having genuine, enquiring conversations with couples who shared their stories, dreams, and plans was touching. These connections are what weddings are all about – love, joy, and shared dreams. The wedding fayre was a community of people all dedicated to making the most special day of someone’s life truly wonderful and I felt like I was part of something significant. After the wedding fayre whirlwind, it’s all about the follow-up. A heartfelt thank-you keeps the connection—and the confetti—floating.
Reflecting on the Experience
Looking back, my first wedding fayre turned out to be so much more than just a marketing opportunity—it became a true milestone. It marked the moment my business stepped confidently into the world, fully formed and full of heart.
Along the way, I connected with some truly wonderful couples, learned valuable lessons (including exactly how many leaflets one person can carry without developing biceps), and left feeling more inspired than ever.
What began with nerves ended with connection, confidence, and a heart full of purpose
So, if you’re thinking about exhibiting at a wedding fayre for the first time—go for it. Be bold, stay prepared, and most importantly, be unapologetically yourself. After all, there’s no one else quite like you… and that’s where the real magic begins.
